RIP Ursula Le Guin

I was saddened to see in today's newspaper that Ursula Le Guin died on the 22nd. She was a great writer, indeed you could make a good case for her having been the best living writer of SF and fantasy fiction and perhaps even the best ever. As well as being a fine story-teller, she also wrote beautiful prose. Her books were often relatively short, ( Read more... )

Congratulations on scoring more boundaries winning the World Cup (finally)! You don't strike me as the fingernail-biting type but that was insanely nerve-wracking. Watching it in conjunction with the tennis as they both reached their climax was a memory to savour for the ages. I hope you had an enjoyable day! All that hard work paying off and what a way to transition to the Ashes. :-)

Thanks. :)

A couple of months ago I did a silly thing, and booked a long weekend away, not realising it would class with the WC final. However I did manage to watch the last 30 overs or so of England's innings on the TV in my hotel run, as well as the super overs. I can't help feeling sorry for NZ, who were very unlucky to lose (but of course am still glad that England won).

Hahaha rookie sports-follower scheduling error! (Narrator: we've all been there) :-) I'm glad you were able to watch the most important phase of the match though. I'm absolutely gutted for the Kiwis. Just goes to show, the game is ultimately decided by a matter of inches this way and that, with a healthy dollop of luck.

Is it too early to ask about Ashes predictions?

I think the Ashes series will be very close. Australia have a very strong attack, with Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon, but in English conditions (and no doubt there will be a lot of green pitches prepared again) their batting could be over-dependent on Warner and Smith.

It will be interesting to see what pace attack England select. Stokes will be the fourth seamer, and then they have to select three from Anderson, Broad, Arcger, Wood, Woakes and Sam Curran - not easy!
