i don't like this type of music, but i saw matisyahu perform this summer (it's a new york thing) and i have to say he's a really amazing performer. i suppose i've fallen into the trap of "wow, it's a rapping hasidic jew...i know by their rules they prob think this is nuts and/or unnacceptable" but i was pretty captured by it.
supposedly he was just an nyu kid that converted later in life. which adds to the 'gimmick' effect.
what worries me at all is the fact that the video you linked to looks like it was filmed in cbgb's...which even if it was is kind of impossible (space, lighting, etc) ...so that's the most fake of all...
Ditto on this not being my usual musical fare, but I'm tempted to buy the album nonetheless; his online videos struck me as pretty powerful and show what can be done in the genre... It certainly makes a change from bling and braces
