An ending that can be taken either as a flashback or as a do over, and works just as well for either.
This chapter reminded me of the movie, 25th Hour, where the father narrates the whole life his son could have before him, if he drives him out of state, instead of to prison. Wife, kids, happiness, the lot. You see Ed Norton's character live this life, and think 'well, it's not often you see a criminal get away with it in a Hollywood movie, but that's awesome'. The movie is ending on a real high.... And then it cuts back to dad and son in the car, not driving out of state, but just going to jail.
The road not travelled, but in this case (as I'm reading it as a reset, rather than a flashback) it might work out so much better for Jeff and Annie.
