its kind of insulting

so i've gone to NJ a few times on my weekends for this big project that my work has going on right. as a thank you for this, i, a jew, received a big box of pork products from my work. i got pork hot dogs, pork chops, stuff potatoes with bacon, and fish stuff with crab meat. when i complained to my boss about this, he didn't think anything of it ( Read more... )

Have you ever expressed any dietary restrictions to your employer?

I don't assume anyone "gets it" unless I've specifically explained my personal observance of kashrut to them. And I am very proactive with my employer about what I will and will not eat as we have a company cafeteria and food is often enough provided during our busy seasons that it would be inconvenient for me if I were not accommodated.

However, the response of your boss is still troubling. If he didn't know, he has no reason to be sorry he didn't accommodate you. But he should still have noted that for future reference and made sure you understood that it was not meant as a personal slight.

i work out of my minivan, so generally it's not a concern. i'm in MD and he's in philly, so we don't exactly eat in the same place. a few years ago we had a big meeting in NYC and i did mention both mine and my wife's dietary restrictions, but apparently they didn't remember. anyway, belkev now has a bunch of food.
