Beets First try: Steamed.  I cut one up and steamed it. I didn't put enough water in to cook long enough and wound up starting to burn the pan. Now I have to buy a new one. They're definitely fibrous, kind of like jicama.Conclusion: Steamed beets are okay but I should have accented with something.

You don't really need a recipe for applesauce-- just peel/chop/boil apples in some water until they break down. Maybe add cinnamon. But I found that pearsauce or apples+pear is very sweet. Apples+raspberries works nicely too.

Hmmm.... well you could use any of them, but the yellow or green ones are probably more standard (but of course if you don't want to add sugar than green might not be the best). I guess it's a taste preference. Boiling makes them a little sweeter than they already are (I think--it makes pears a LOT sweeter).
