Sleeve cutouts for costume

Oct 25, 2006 10:30

Spent over an hour trying out different stitches and ideas. I think the buttonhole idea would have worked great if I hadn't already cut out the ellipses. I think I may have to resort to *gasp* stitching the edges of the ellipses by hand to finish them. Starting to feel the pressure of the pending day. I still have to drag mine and Ken's costumes ( Read more... )

Lions & Centaurs & Elipses, oh my! ofenjen October 25 2006, 17:08:57 UTC
Elipses... Try stitching a facing or bias tape around each elipse with a very narrow stitch, scant 1/8 or 1/4 if you can manage it. Then turn the other to the inside & either top stitch or hand stitch inside. It'll be way easier than trying to make it lie flat hand stitch the whole thing & if you blind stitch it will look really clean. You may need to to do each side of the elipse seperately to get clean corners.

How many elipses are there total?

I think 6-8, I don't remember, but I'll check when I get home. I like your idea though... that might just work... now that I have a handy dandy rotary cutter I could make my own bias tape (in a nice, narrow strip) from the scraps of the green fabric so that it matches... I think you are right, though, it might be easier to do each ellipse in separate halves. Thank you thank you thank you!

Ok, so I worked on it last night, and there were 5 per sleeve for a total of ten. I wounded myself with the rotary cutter, but managed to get my little baby-size facings pinned to all the ellipses and completely finished one as a sample before sewing up the others. It was quite painstaking, but looks great! I stitched up the rest on that sleeve, but have not finished them yet, or the other sleeve. I'll do that tonight after Dr. Who on Sci Fi channel...I mean, priorities first! :)
