OK first DEEP BREATHS...... that's it. Good girl.

Now...

Do you have a pair of black dress or dressy looking pants?

Topped with a black nice blouse or sweater? Simple but elegant necklace?

Something quick, easy... clean or near clean...

??

I have a black knit skirt that looks dressy enough if you pair it with a nice blouse, but I don't have a dressy enough blouse. Trouble is I don't go anywhere that I need "semi-formal cocktail attire" other than the annual holiday party, and anything I wore previous years has been given away (except the knit skirt) due to being too large.
Went home at lunch to try on dresses a coworker brought me and the two formals I bought before PR and EVERYTHING was too small, except for this red slutty number that showed every roll of fat and for which I would have to go purchase a strapless bra. She suggest I go braless. Um No way.

What we used to consider "semi-formal cocktail" is not the same anymore

You've got the skirt. Perhaps a nice sweater over it for warmth (ok so i'm sitting here with the heat on and a portable heater right in front of me :) )

Or a tank top and jacket of some kind?

*hugs*

Well I ended up racing to Fashion Bug and found a blouse and matching jewelry on sale, and managed to flip my hair up kind of funky and it looked cute. THe blouse was actually big on me but looked ok and they didn't have it in the next size down. I tend to get a bit nervous and warm at occasions such as this and my face flushes, so I tend to stick to chiffon-y type items for occasions like this.

Don't worry about G, he loves late gifts! As for the holidays, whatever you do is from the heart and that is always the point!

Mmm, wish I'd know about the holiday party situation, I could have been scouring the thrift stores for you. :(

Don't make too many cocktails, or you really will draw attention to yourself! 'Twill be okay :)

I still feel bad that he'll be getting it so late. I get home and I'm just so tired, and once I've eaten dinner I'm pretty much done for the night. I don't even check my email. But I am bound and determined to get both his and the secret santa pkg ready to mail no later than Monday.

The few times I've been thrifting on lunch break (such as looking for the cathouse) over the last few weeks I have kept my eyes open for a satin blouse or something along those lines but haven't had any luck other than ones with stains or tears or something. I really want to wear that gold dress but it's still too tigh, it shows every lump.

If they serve wine with dinner I'll have a glass or two, but it's a cash bar tonight so I won't be buying any drinks. Maybe someone will buy one for me. ;) I just could have sworn I had until next week but no.

Fingers crossed for a glass of wine or two, sounds like you'll need it!

In the meantime big HUGS from me. I should have your holiday package out soon, if, that is, I can ever think of something to put in your for your DH! Hubbys are so hard to decide on!

Well, my family would probably agree with you, just because it's tough to come up with a gift for someone you've met once. ;) Fandoms include Shakespeare (Hamlet's his favorite), Trek (OS and NG) and Zombies (George Romero). Hobbies include reading, audiobooks, music (Bob Dylan and Neil Young are BIG favorites). Oh, and if you ever see tha "ZOmbie Survival Guide" book at your favorite thrift store, please snag it for me, I really want to give him that, and his bday is January 2.

Goodluck with the work dinner. I hope you find something.

i like the fact that our dinners aren't too flashy here at work. I can normally just wear my work clothes but add a fancy wrap and different jewellery to do the trick. Then we also have a ultra casual BBQ for the work xmas do lunch, for those that find the dinner too much. I actually need to dress down for the work BBQ Xmas lunch! Beuaty of having Christmas in Summer i guess...

Sounds good, wish ours were like that. Trouble is, we have a rather relaxed dress code at the office, so nothing I wear to work would even work, except maybe my black slacks or black skirt and bring a dressier blouse to change into. I ended up leaving early and racing to Fashion Bug where I found a nice blouse and matching jewelry. It snuck up on my this year, I could have sworn it was next week. I got the blouse 40% off and the jewelry half price, though, so not too bad.
