There's a tiny bit of snow on the ground... a dusting that fell at about 5:15am. Schools are now on a 2-hour delay. As a mom who also works outside the home, I have to say it is much easier to deal with an all-out school closure than a 2-hour delay. I mean, I don't have a 2-hour delay for work.... that puts the start of school at 10:20, and I have ( Read more... )

She was late, but I had no choice. I called from work ahead of time and told them that I simply had no other choice than bringing her late or sending her on the city bus, which she had never done alone before, and I wasn't sending her for the first time on a day with wind gusts of 50mph.

I understand why they do it, but it is really inconvenient, especially you have no other choice.

It's just so dumb. If they do the 2 hour delay, then it counts the same as a full day when it comes to federal funding for the school... but a makeup day would count as a full day too, I think the teachers just don't want to have to do a makeup day. Yet another reason I wish we would switch to going to school year-round like the UK and Europe. We're not farmers anymore, the kids don't need 3 months off in the summer to work the fields.

We have a large time off for Summer, but it's only 6 weeks. And that's over Christmas as well. In some places it just gets too hot here that time of year too. 3 months off for Summer is a LONG time. It must be a nightmare for working parents.

Well, more a major inconvenience than a nightmare... this past summer was cheaper with her too old for the summer program at the YMCA, but I hated that she was just sitting at home on the computer or watching tv and playing video games. I've got to find more for her to do this summer.

Plus the kids have to review everything at the beginning of the school year, stuff leaks out of their brains over 3 months of playtime, lol. Having 6 weeks over the holidays would be cool. Phebe gets 2 weeks... then a week for Spring break, then June-August off... just seems counter-productive to me.
