A couple of weeks ago, I wound up watching Tyra Banks's show, and I made some notes about it. They are not particularly coherent and they're probably too blunt to really be polite, but here they are for kicks:

"Then they say it, they say 'em--"

Sorry, this is long; your post sparked a lot of thoughts about this. I'm always a little curious at the good-looking women who have such visceral disgust at seeing fat women. You'd think they'd be sort of spitefully happy about it; the more unattractive women there are, means that the attractive women would presumably have better odds of landing a man, since the pool of good-looking women is smaller but the number of men remains the same. Basically, if there's one hot girl surrounded by ugly girls, the hot girl would get all the men's attention and you would think that logically she would be happy about that, instead of bitching that the other girls are fat ( ... )

It goes the other way, too. There's such a fat-bitch skinny-bitch opposition, and I can understand it to some extent. I've always been chubby and so I've always assumed that skinny girls won't like me. Not just that they won't like how I look, but that they won't like me as a person. Which I have learned is kind of ridiculous except for in cases like the fanatics who end up on talk shows. The skinny-girl hate goes beyond that, though. Even if a fat girl is girl is confident with her body, she can't help but notice that our society is wired to give the more good-looking people (both men and women) better jobs, promotions, services, and whatever else, even though it's usually not a conscious decision. Without being good-looking (and lord knows an overweight person could NEVER be good-looking, amirite?) average people have to work harder to prove themselves. This preoccupation with physical appearances is unfair and also ridiculous, but that's the way it is ( ... )
