I can't help you there, but if you're willing to pay that much, why not just go ahead and shell out for a shinkansen ticket? XD It's not that much more expensive relatively speaking, and you get there a lot sooner

Seconding the above poster, but if you absolutely want to take the (night)bus: www.123bus.net. You can book online or via phone, I've used them twice in the past (cheapest option though, took about 6 1/2 hours overnight, with 10min breaks every two hours) and didn't encounter any problems. JR busses are a lot more expensive, in my experience.

I went on one of those buses and it was a torturous hell ride. I broke and took the shinkansen on the return trip. And my ticket was 8000yen =P

... I never heard of one for 3000yen, but if you're going to be uncomfortable anyway, might as well go the cheapest way =)

I booked mine at JTB-- doesn't really help if you're not in Japan now though. I don't think you'll have a problem booking one on the same day like you said.

I've never taken the JR bus on that route, but as far as I know Kintetsu buses still go from Osaka to Tokyo, and they're very nice. Usually there are two or three rest stops along the way with access to bathrooms and vending machines, although the buses do have a toilet for the desperate. ;) Of all the highway buses I've used, the Hankyuu buses are by far the nicest, and cost about the same as JR (8,000 to 9,000 yen one way). They always have pillows, blankets, and slippers, and their seats are usually more comfortable. I know there's a Hankyuu kousoku bus terminal at Umeda Station, where you can book tickets same-day or in advance.

If you can get a shinkansen ticket for the same price, there's probably not much reason to take the night bus-- unless time is important, in which case you wouldn't be using several waking hours of your day to sit on the train.

When I was visiting Tokyo, a fellow tourist pointed out some chartered buses (advertised in a free magazine aimed at English speakers) that were running the same time I wanted to go to Osaka. It was only 3000 yen... and ironically more comfy than when I used JR to go from Osaka to Hiroshima.

So, I'm just trying to say there are lots of deals on that corridor, and price is not always indicative of comfort.
