So, like, another less-important issue I am having is that I cannot make myself a decent cup of coffee at my apartment to save my life ( Read more... )

Is there not a Starbucks or Dotour near you? They sell ground coffee.
The local supermarket should also sell Japanese brands of ground coffee (Key, UCC, etc...)

(p.s. Mr. Donuts coffee sucks.)

I'm the kid who drives 3.5 hours to the nearest Starbucks once or twice a month to get fresh ground beans.

It's worth it.

I totally sympathize. We even had a couple of specialty coffee shops with roasters in the tiny city I lived near. I bought their darkest beans and they were still awful.

I always made a point to stop by a Starbucks any time I was in a real city to grab some beans. Not my favorite here in the States, but it was the best I ever found in Japan.

If you're not in a real city often enough, hit up The Flying Pig, which will deliver Starbucks or Kirkland (a generic American brand) beans right to your door via the incomparable Japanese postal service. The Flying Pig is run by Costco. It's also good for peanut butter, black beans, bagels, and many other foreign foods you might be craving.

I used to buy these tiny filters with grounds at the supermarket that you just pour boiling water over into the cup. I got quite addicted to them. Any large-ish grocery should have them in the tea/coffee aisle. Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but they're cheap, so it's worth a try?

I really liked UCC's Mocha Blend. (Mocha; not cafe mocha.) It came in a vacuum-sealed brick of ground coffee at the supermarket, and it has a nice rich flavor. A little expensive, but not as pricey as beans from Starbucks.
