“Commonly understood” where? Don't try to say that on campus at an American University - you'll be haragued and bitched at about how “the Revolution was betrayed,” and then the campus police will be called to throw you out.

On the Canadian campuses I float around, I've encountered very few self-identified Communists. While leftism abounds, few think that Communism is actually a viable system. Besides it's not longer cool to be Communist because there is an attitude that Marxism is so passe.

Canadian universities too. " Communism works in theory but not practice" is a common assumption to many. But as you have accurately stated, the theory is equally flawed.

If it doesn't work in practice, then it doesn't work in theory either. A theory about reality actual has to correspond with the reality. Besides, if people at least admit it Communism doesn't work in practice, they're admitting that it didn't work and it won't work.
