Blaargh, haven't hardly written anything in a month or two. I completely lost my funny around June-ish, and while I think it's back, I'm a little tentative about finishing up any of my humor stuff. I'm in a perfect mood for writing angst, but I'm so sick of writing it. Maybe I should try for something fluffy instead--only I really don't have any ( Read more... )

That's the problem, isn't it? That kind of deep-seated, silent racism doesn't show itself easily.

I guess what bothers me so much isn't that it's there as that some people are willing to do just about anything to avoid confronting it. bethbethbeth has a post with several ETAs where she sort of started from a less-than-optimal position, but with thinking about it and listening to other people, she, y'know, revised her opinion and mindset. And that is SO RARE in racial discussions that I just wanted to cry.

Apparently calling people on their racist bullshit is slander now. 9_9

Yeah, I'm really hoping they give witchqueen a personal apology for that.

I can't begin to say how angry this wank makes me. I tried arguing with some people on the second D_D post. Then I gave up, and just agreed with the poster who called the idiot I was arguing with... an idiot.

I know what you're saying- we all converse with one another through each others journals, which at times can get personal, and look at each others fanwork, which also can be personal, so we feel as though that we may 'know' each other very well as a result of all this when really that's probably not so true.

That's true, though I don't think it only applies to fandom; IRL, it tends to take the form of being broadsided with 'oh, you're a good , not a ' or something similar :/

This is probably one of the truest and most telling things; in the end there are many we could have easily associated with, but didn't for whatever reason only to find later that so many important things can change.

*nods* Yeah, though I suspect in this case it wasn't so much a change as bringing out something that was previously hidden.

It's hard, because as you and others have said, even IRL you never know. I've heard some of the most ignorant things come out of the mouths of people I otherwise thought of as respectful and generally nice.

If it's any reassurance... I'm not one of those people.I don't know every flister's religion, sexual preference, ethnicity, country of origin, or even gender - nor do I care. And if I were to ever accidentally say something offensive I didn't know was offensive (because let's face it, we've all had embarassing moments like that) I would apologize upon being corrected immediately, because I can't stand ignorance.

(Although that said, the term the person used... well, I'd never heard it, but any long term word for "marriage" ought to be looked up in the dictionary before use, because if it's complicated it's probably biased in some way.)

Thanks. The way certain people have behaved just really taints everyone who isn't a jerk. It's not fair that you even have to make a statement like this, and it isn't fair that even with that, there's no way for me to know 100% for sure: not because of anything you've done as a person, but because of how other people have conducted themselves. I want to say that of course you'd never do something like that. And don't get me wrong: I really don't think you would. But then I can't help but wonder: if I'd known any of the d_d mods as long as I'd known you... would I have said the same thing about them last week? The whole thing just makes me feel hateful and paranoid at the same time.
