Sadly, I don't know much about her other than she really kick started the civil rights movement by standing up for herself.

Was she active in the civil rights movement her whole life? What was she doing in her latter years?

Well, she actually sat down for herself ;-). She worked for years in Congressman Conyer's office in Ohio.
