you'd also have to pay for a mars home and a way to get there... and maybe back to Earth to get some toilet paper and whatnot.

but i really wonder if you would have to squat there for 20years. i mean, it's not governed by Earth law (which isn't even consistent throughout the planet).

what you need is just to make a little flag, stick it in the ground and claim it as your own. it's worked for people over the years.

if there are any martians, you'll have to pay them off with some beads (hopefully they're as 'stupid' as humans), and maybe stick them in some camps and kill a few.

if anyone says that you cant claim it as your own if there are martians, just say there are none. it's terra nullis.

Hmm, you may have to fight some ownership claims. The Mars rover got there first and so either the USA, Australia, some other collaborators or robots may have first claim. Make sure you sort that out before it becomes a problem.

I don't think robots count.
'Cos isn't that like throwing a message-in-a-bottle into the ocean, then waiting for somebody to reply to the message and throw it back for you?
