Okay, here's my review/recap of this episode. And let me just preface this with if you don't want anyone to harshen your squee too much, maybe you shouldn't read. I didn't tear this episode into pieces, but I wasn't squeeing my head off about everything. I realize many other people probably are, and I respect your opinions so I really hope you can respect mine. Sorry if I sound overly defensive but there are times where I feel I really need to be. :/
Where to begin...
I'll begin with my take on the episode overall. Sadly it didn't really wow me too much. I did read the advance reviews and maybe it was a mistake because most of them told me I'd laugh my ass off. Despite that though, I didn't set my expectations that high. I was nervous about it ever since I first heard about it, but decided I'd go into it with an open mind and try to think positive.
Well, parts that I really worried about weren't as bad as I thought they would be (mostly), but honestly I wasn't LMAO, ROFLPIMP or any of that. I found quite a few of the in-jokes cute, and I did laugh at Sam and Dean's attempts to act (especially Dean's intense expressions) as well as a few other things, but I wasn't laughing till I was crying in parts where I probably should have been. I was just kinda like "heh..." in those. Maybe I have an injured funny bone or maybe it's just that my mind has been preoccupied with planning my wedding, but... eh. I REALLY tried to love this one. I really tried to give it a chance and like I said, a lot of the jokes were cute but I'd say this one was a lot like Hollywood Babylon, which I liked quite a bit, but wasn't LOL'ing at it the whole time either. I'll talk about this more later, because there were things I did like very much.
Anyway...
According to Dean, Alcohol = "Hunter's Helper". Heh.
Balty shows up to perform a spell, he's all in a hurry telling them that Raphael is after all of them, he's sending a bounty hunter and meanwhile, Cas is underground. Hmmmmm, interesting, that last part. He gives Sam a key and tells them to run with it.
Eep, that bounty hunter guy is kinda scary looking.
Boys are in TV Land now. Er... TV Studio Land.
Brian Doyle-Murray is kinda awesome as Bob Singer. :) Awwwww @ boys not knowing what the hell is going on.
And the in-jokes begin. They talk about cutting certain scenes and a scene featuring the boys talking on the hood of the Impala about their feelings is mentioned as a possible cut. Singer: "Then you answer the hate mail."
"Jensen" aka Dean is lead over to a makeup table and it's a kinda cool touch having actual pics of the boys taped up on top. Makeup girl gives Dean a touch-up. "Oh crap, I'm a painted whore." Heh.
Meanwhile Puppy is doing an interview... awww, poor clueless Puppy. :)
Dean meets up with him later and asks why they'd want to know about their personal lives, or something like that. Sam: "According to the interview, not many people do." HAH! Yeah, right. Sometimes I wish.
They go outside and see a few Impalas in different stages of disrepair. Poor Dean... "I feel sick." Hee.
They find Cas who tells them that Balty put them in an alternate universe type thing. Dean calls it a "clown factory." Apparently the key Balty gave Sam opens a room with all the weapons he stole from Heaven, and he'd given it to them to keep it safe.
Almost forgot the name thing. "You're Jensen Ackles and I'm something called a Jared Padalecki." "What, you're Polish now?' And then in this scene, Dean refers to him as "Padaleski" and Sam corrects him. Heh.
Then Cas seems different and he's this guy named Misha. Dean: "Meesha? Jensen? What's up with the names around here?" And now come the Misha in-jokes. "I'm gonna tweet this one." So in this AU the Minions are called Mish-amigos and he makes a tweet about "J-Squared" and how he feels like one of the boys now.
Now we're in "Jensen"'s trailer. He's got a helicopter apparently and a huge aquarium. Hee, the copy of Supernatural magazine was a cute touch and I liked Dean's "nice Blue Steel, Sam" crack. Sam goes online and finds out that Dean was in a soap opera. He pulls up a clip of Jensen in DOOL! Heh, I gotta admit that was pretty awesome.
Back on set they find out that the weapons are all made of rubber. Singer is watching them and says that at least they're still talking to each other.
And we meet Clif (who Sam first calls "Clint"...heh). He asks Dean where he wants to go and Dean just tells him to take him to "Jared"'s place.
"Jared" has a huge mansion and Sam thinks that he must be the star. There's a huge tanning bed and Sam asks, "What am I, Dracula?" Aw. :) Dean lifts the cover and says he's George Hamilton Dracula. So apparently "Jared" is totally full of himself as shown by all the different paintings of himself, and..... Ruby?
Dean hears a noise, pulls back the curtain and tells Sam that he has a camel out there.
"It's an alpaca, dumbass," says Ruby... or at least they think that's who it is. She kisses Sam and he is FREAKED OUT, bug-eyes and all.
Wow, so "Gen" and "Jensen" don't get along. And "Gen" seems like a real biatch, doesn't she? The boys are still quite freaked to learn that Sam-er, "Jared" is married to her. Loved Dean's reaction after she tells him that alpacas are the "greenest" animals. Some other interesting charities she has... otters?
Dean: "You married Ruby? Fake Ruby?" Sam: "I should find out her name."
So "Jared" has a poker table in his office, too. And that huge photo above the desk - is that a manip of him as a cowboy? The boys are maxing out his credit cards to buy... what, exactly? Did I miss that?
Yep, "Gen" really is pretentious the way she corrects Sam on her name. She leads him upstairs and he is soooo awkward. In this whole scene it's obvious that he's just playing along. Dean meanwhile sacks out on the couch.
Boys back on set. Singer says that Dean-er, "Jensen"'s enthusiasm is refreshing. The boys get their deliveries. "Misha": Priority. What's in it?" Sam: "Part of a dead body." "Misha": "Oh, cool."
Okay, so this was one of the few parts that actually did have me laughing quite a lot. The boys are doing a scene and are failing miserably at trying to acting. What got me in particular were Dean's intense expressions and doing the gravelly voice. He tells Sam to look anywhere but at the camera.
Eh, I don't know why, but the "Misha" tweeting bits kinda fell flat to me... I mean they were a bit amusing, like when he was actually spelling out "ROFLMAO" and stuff, but... maybe I'm just not into the whole Twitter thing that much anyway. *shrugs*
So they think the boys are smuggling drugs with all the deliveries.
Our boys wonder if there are no hunters at all in this reality, maybe there is no supernatural, and thus no angels. Interesting idea...
Crap, the bounty hunter guy is here. And he catches up with our boys but can't kill them. Because I assume there is no supernatural type stuff in this AU? Yep, Sam says that there's "no magic in the house." They wail on the bounty hunter and the crew thinks they're beating up an extra to death.
Hey, the crew guy in the yellow shirt (Garwin Sanford) is the guy who played Deacon in Folsom Prison Blues! *has geek moment* They think that Kripke should get up there but Sera (whom I've heard is lending her real voice here) objects, and besides, Kripke is up in a cabin writing something.
Back to "Misha" in his car, tweeting about having the feeling that someone's in the back of your car - when the bounty hunter grabs him.
Another in-joke. Talking to Bob Singer, Dean asks him what kind of douchebag names a character after himself. Heh. The boys aren't happy with this whole setup. Singer tells them they can't make up lines. Sam isn't happy about this.
And now here comes the element of this ep that I did like quite a bit: the brothers sticking together. Dean tells Singer: "You heard my brother - that's right, I said 'brother.'" He tells him that they're not actors, they're hunters and where they come from, they matter to that world. He ends by telling Singer they quit and they walk off the set.
"Misha" is simpering and whining for the bounty hunter to spare him. But the guy shows him no mercy, kills him and then tries to call Raphael.
And now Puppy-er, Sam, makes me love him even more. He wants to go back and tells Dean that their friends are back there. Dean thinks they have it better off here. He mentions Sam having a huge mansion and being married to Ruby, and how great is that. (WTF, DEAN?? Is that in character for him at all, after how much he hated Ruby? Or is he trying to separate this girl who just looks like Ruby from the actual demon?) Sam counters by saying that they won't mean the same thing here; they're not even brothers here. (AWWWWWWW.)
And now Kripke shows up. Is it me or did that actor look familiar? He kind of reminded me of the guy in that couple from Scarecrow, the ones that Dean met while they were eating and he ended up saving them from the scarecrow? Wonder if it's the same guy... maybe not, but he looked kind of like him. A cover of Variety is mentioned. And the "extra" who is really the bounty hunter shows up and...
Kills Kripke! And Singer! And a whole bunch of other crew members! Singer's "Noooooo!" as he shoots Kripke and the slow-motion plus the music in the background was kinda amusing. Anyway all this killing takes place until Dean beats the guy senseless, Sam joins in and gets the key! They fall into the sigil and we get a freeze frame just before going to commercial.
Pretty cool meatsuit Raphael has now. She's about to attack our boys when Balty shows up. He tells her the weapons are gone and she's about to go after him when Cas shows up. So, Cas has the weapons now. I knew he was up to something, though I'm kinda confused about his role in this AU. So the guy we saw who eventually got killed was actually "Misha", not Cas as "Misha"? That's what it looked like to me. So the fact that Cas was pretty much MIA this whole time had me thinking he was up to something.
Sam's pissed that Cas used them as a diversion. Cas says that if he loses against Raphael, they lose everything. He then apologizes and says he'll explain when he can just before he leaves. I guess we will find out more about this whole thing soon.
Heh, Sam is knocking on the door to make sure it's solid and thus real. Aw. :) Dean says they're in moldy old Home Sweet Home where things are after them and they're broke again.
Sam: But at least we're talkin'.
I wanna hug Sam. So bad.
So that's about it. Again, I'm really sorry that I couldn't say I absolutely freakin' loved every single minute of this ep, laughed my ass off, etc. I mean I could, but I wouldn't be very honest. Again I did find some of the in-jokes cute, and the scene where the boys tried to act made me laugh quite a bit, but that was about it. That's not to say I 100% hated it. Like I said, there were some things that made me laugh, and I loved the thread about the boys sticking together. But... I dunno, there were eps that made me laugh even more, especially Clap Your Hands If You Believe. I discussed it with my Mom after it ended and she felt the same way. But hey, those who loved everything about it, I'm glad that you did.
And I reiterate that I didn't hate this one. It still had its moments. And the boys were gorgeous as always. :)
