Dinner for Twelve

Jan 19, 2010 12:01

I am hostessing Bunco this Saturday. As such, I need to plan dinner for twelve, some of whom are vegetarians.

I am having too many ideas and can't seem to narrow it down to just one. It can't be a huge fancy spead, because everyone will be eating between rounds 2 and 3 and the table will be game-littered.

Ideas?

Vegetarian chile and cornbread. Ask me if you need a recipe. Stays warm on top of the stove, is very filling & perfect for this time of year.

PS: If I ever come back, please please please invite me to Bunco.

That sounds so good, but we had chili last month. :P

Next time you are in Seattle that coincides with a Bunco game I will be happy to have you along. :)

Some friends and I just made a bunch of Japanese rice balls today with four fillings: bbq pork, chicken + teriyaki sauce, sauteed tofu pureed with spinach, and smoked salmon + tahini. My friend color-coded the rice with a drop of food coloring in the cooking water so everyone would know which filling went in which rice ball. It's a bit of a job to prep, so not doing it the same day as the event might be best.

Basically you make a big pot of short-grain rice (not long-grain / basmati), then form them into balls with wet hands (the rice is sticky), poke a finger in and put a teaspoon or two of filling in there, cover it up with rice as best you can, and wrap a strip of nori seaweed around to make it easier to hold. They're good warm or cold and are very portable, plus you can serve various sauces on the side, or Asian-inspired munchies.

I am too time constrained this week, but that sounds delicious! Definitely on the to-do list for an afternoon that I have hours of time.

Would upside-down corn bread be too similar to last month's dinner?

Oh! What about tacos? I know homemade refried beans take some time, but at least it's not all hands-on time, and I would think they'd be ok to make ahead if you don't have time that afternoon. If you put out all the components, everyone can assemble their own tacos either with or without meat however they prefer.

Tacos are tempting. One of my favorites, too.

We had upside down cornbread for dinner last night, so that is out for me. :)
