I am considering pickling some carrots this afternoon before going out to dinenr and having people over for tea and birthday cake. Kathryn bought more than she needed at the Yakima Fruit Stand over the weekend and I've been meaning to get to canning some since January. This isn't insanity, insanity would be if she were also thinking of picking berries from the neighbor's yard to make jam to fill the cake with. Jessica and I sort of have a loop we run through and sometimes draw others into: Is this enough? If you're asking, it must not be, we should do more so that we don't starve through the winter. Oh, if we're worried about starving through the winter, then we'll definitely need more of this other thing, too! But at least we've learned a few basic rules such as the importance of taking tea while canning, not putting up more than one type of produce in a single day, and always starting the chutney to simmer first rather than doing faster stuff first and then having three hours of stirring after we're already hot and tired. See, we're totally sensible.

I see it and can understand... I'm just jealous of the ability to do all that and still have energy to spare...

Oh I don't have enough energy for all this, I just keep moving ahead anyway. The tea helps. And sometimes for special occasions we take cat naps during the process. You could totally do it, especially if you helped light a fire under Jessica and I to start earlier in the day so we didn't end up going so late.

Yeah, I wish I had more energy,too. Mostly I just fake it, and then periodically fall apart in utter exhaustion.
