The AFA Hates: Religion

Nov 17, 2009 11:31

Have you ever had a discussion with a religious person where they tried to condemn "blind faith" (i.e. reason, rationality, and the scientific method) and promote their beliefs by calling themselves "skeptics"? It's ADORABLE. The first time I heard a Christian try this he said that he didn't have much faith. At first I felt bad for the guy - then I ( Read more... )

Wow, that's ridiculous. I'd almost want to go to hear how they can possibly make a case out of this.

But who am I related to, here? You, being my friend and long-time familiar (even if I don't think all Christians are lunatics), or these particular nutjobs? After all, I am a Christian, too.

That's a dilemma that all level-headed Christians have to deal with. I remember as a Christian it would frustrate and infuriate me more than anything else. And I'm not being hyperbolic - it really was worse than any other conflict in my life ( ... )

"Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?" Matt. 7:3

It's truly amazing how fundamentalists of every stripe--not just Christians, although Christians do seem to do it particularly well--can develop such a robust and adaptable skepticism of almost anything, EXCEPT for their own narrow perspective. I mean, imagine if they were to use their intellectual gifts, such as they are, for something positive!

I mean, imagine if they were to use their intellectual gifts, such as they are, for something positive!

Combined with their faith and belief in Christ's message, those intellectual gifts could be used to do something truly creative that inspired those around them to spread kindness, do good works, and fight for the abused and mistreated.

And that's not speculation - any Tim Jahn fan will tell you they've seen it in action.

I grew up listening to Donald Wildmon and James Dobson and the rest of the rest of those masters of dogma. Rather than get into it here, I'll see you around at another meetup like last night's. I was the one that had you say your photo URL on my iPhone recorder app. Post your pics!
