Well, you had to wait for 18 years to have a president that has the appearance of decency. Of course, the jury is still out there; 100 days in office are far too short to pass a definitive judgment.

But since Ronald Reagan left office, Mr Obama has the potential to be a respected president again. He will still be a far cry from prime ministers like Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher or Winston Churchill though.

this is a pretty silly objection. my contention is not that obama is a great president, merely that the esteem in which he is held by the rest of the world is a welcome change, and a useful one to boot ( ... )

I did not voice any objection, nor did I imply to level an obviously badly needed history lesson.

I merely implied in my comment that it is too early to praise Mr Obama whilst the historical dimension of his merits is still missing, owing to his brief time in office. I do not share the hysterical courtship from the masses in some parts of Europe, but subscribe to the deeply rooted scepticism of the Obama administration as expressed from the governments of France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Russia and Israel.

I am satisfied that Mr Obama took office after the previous buffoon in the White House. But the ominous signs that the silly rhetoric from Mr Obama contrasts the necessity of firm action in tackling global problems and conflicts - a trait wholly shared by our imbeciles of the Labour Party - bodes ill for the future; on both sides of the Atlantic.
