Those of you who talk to me a lot online are probably aware of how much the labor situation here upsets me. I can tell that people aren't treated well, but I've had trouble expressing exactly how I know it to be the case.

The human rights report and the subsequent articles in the papers shed some light on how widespread the abuse is

It has nothing to do with the fact that they're workers. It's that they don't view them as people.

I guess what I don't understand is how someone anyone else as not a person.

It is the degenerate eventual conclusion of having people think of others as the OTHER.

I've just started reading Karen Armstrong's latest book, The Great Transformation, which is about the Axial Age. One of the main shifts in understanding that she says happened in that crucial era of history was for people to think of others outside their group as human. I would have thought that the humanity of other people would be self-evident, but maybe not.

I begin to wonder whether it's possible to have servants (maids, nannies, drivers, etc.) without stopping thinking of them as people.

Yep.. same in Dubai - and with the whole Emiratization process in dubai - they are indirectly forcing out people without higher incomes, and forcing smaller businesses to shutdown.

I'm one of those underpaid overworked employees. I'm not religious like these locals claim to be, but I do believe in karma. What goes around comes around and I sure hope I'll get to see what comes around in my lifetime =)
