Oooh I look forward to seeing what you think of the covers!! I personally have a 67 year old dad so Ive grown up with both retro/old sounding tunes and pretty modern stuff cos my mum is only in her 40's, and then of course, I have my own tastes, so I am able to listen to all kinds of music, originals, covers and everything in between. Wow, it's good to see you have such an interest in music and whether or not covers work, as some do and sadly others dont and I think you're right, cover versions these days are widely seen as a way as connecting with a modern audience, so once the audience changes again, as no doubt it will in a few years from now, it will be interesting to see how artists and musicians adapt in terms of the songs they sing.
I am soo glad you like The Corrs version, I was absolutely blown away when I first heard it..and that was because the original was pretty much the soundtrack to my younger years! There is something about Kate's voice it has to be said, I agree with you there, she has one of those voices that people either love or hate, so you've got to be in a certai mood or mind frame to listen to her. With Jeff, and I own the Grace album, I think a lot of people can just put on Hallelujah, or any of his songs for that matter, and just lose themselves for a while..and I think we all need to do that now and again.
I tend to prefer always the original versions because that's the way the artist wanted them to be. That was exactly my POV, too! But, maybe there a re a few exclusions. Think, and not only because of I'm a huge fan of them, but I like 'Stronger' covered by the 30s more than the orininals, as for an examble! Very little sometimes songs were coverd by the same bands or singer as well. Or they mdified their songs a little and involved other singers into their song as a kind of second version, you know...like Hurricane with and without Kanye...I don't like him actually that much. But the version within him isn't that bad either! Or Linkin Park with and without Jay Z! Both sounds interesting for me! Will honestly say without is slightly better to my ears, but within him, not bad, not bad!
Gotta agree with you on the MARS version of Stronger, definitely. I have never been the biggest fan of Kanye but he's alright on the version of Hurricane (even if he didn't seem to know all the words at the ema's...)
I appreciate your comments - it's nice to see people are equally opinionated as me!
