Contemporary Archaeology

Some people scoff about the term 'contemporary archaeology', and sometimes their claims are legitimate. A lot of contemporary archaeology, the study of recent past material culture, can get a bit off the wall, or even be unnecessary. But as with all research fields, some of the work can also be quite interesting.

The most dramatic example of the time-capsule effect I can think of is the city of Pripyat', Ukraine, which was hurriedly evacuated after the Chernobyl' disaster, and has not been resettled. The entire city offers a glimpse of life in the USSR. This site offers some contemporary views, but I have seen more dramatic examples, like your photo above, elsewhere.

Ah, I found the first (and most dramatic) of the Pripyat' "ghost town" photo galleries I've seen, here. The author claims to have motorcycled alone into the Chornobyl' area, but in fact she was part of a group tour.
