Cricket!

Some of you may be shocked and disturbed to discover that I actually attended a sporting event this evening. Not only attended, but paid for a ticket and actually enjoyed it. (How many geek points are revoked for that admission?) Anyways, it's late and I'm tired, so this post will probably be somewhat more rambling and incoherent than usual ( Read more... )

I'll be at Kingsmead for the Pro20 game between the Dolphins and the Cobras on Friday - working in the press box again.

My cousin gets in on his UCT radio press pass. Awesome parking. :-)

They call the half time the "dinner break". Having watched the highlights this morning there was some awesome hitting in that game - and the caught-and-bowled you reference was very impressive too. I also recall a run-out in which the bowler threw down the stumps at the other end which was quite impressive.

In all, I gather it wasn't as bad as you had feared? There's nothing wrong with enjoying sport *and* being a geek :-)

Incidentally, what is cricket math? Is that what Ron2k will be practicing on Friday when he does the scoring?

Originally it was a typo, but it turns out that at the time we were computing run rates (since they were shown only on the scoreboard we were sitting under and not the one we could see).

And yes, it was a lot of fun. I'm told that since the Cobras won (not my team yet -- I still have enough Durban in me to cheer on the Dolphins whenever they're playing) we get a semi-final sometime soon. I've also been promised an invitation to that, which I will almost certainly be accepting.

That's not actually guaranteed, since the Cobras failed to secure a bonus point. A home semi is very likely at Newlands, but not mathematically guaranteed yet.
