Thanks, and I understand (I think). Don't let my snark at some of the logic lapses prevent you from seeing this.
As for the prequels, to "get" The Avengers to its fullest extent, you should consider seeing (in order of excellentness)
Iron Man: Tony's origin story. Actually not much connection to the Avengersverse aside from the post-credits teaser, but a good movie in of itself and it well help you understand Tony's relationship with Pepper.
Captain America: Iron Man was the best superhero movie I'd seen since The Incredibles. This one topped them both. Excellent invocation of 40's style pulp superhero adventure, and a really good character study into what makes a selfless hero, in a way that the Superman movies never really pulled off.
Heavily connected with the Avengers continuity, introducing the Cosmic Cube Tesseract, and the weapons HYDRA based off it.
Thor: Not quite as compelling as Iron Man and Captain America, but a good entertaining movie bouyed along by Chris Hemsworth's performance as the title character and Tom
( ... )
The Incredible Hulk -- I also liked the ( momentary ) clip of "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", since they obviously couldn't have a Bill Bixby cameo.

I admit, I felt minimally deprived, but, because of your exemplary summary, I not only don't feel at all deprived, I feel blessed.
(note - blessed because I've read your summary, not because I haven't seen the movie. I admit, there seems to be room for confusion there.)
Maybe I'll even look at the DVD. (I haven't looked at most of the prequels. Should I?)
Thank you!
