Scenario: A slightly modified Space Shuttle is launching from Vandenberg AFB with a light cargo (6,000 lbs) heading up into a polar orbit to redevous with a space station orbiting at an altitude of 1,000 km.

Thanks! I figured Vandenberg was a given. I remember the detail about that launch site being used for polar orbits from my rather dog eared copy Shuttle Down. Anyidea about how long it would take to get up to that altitude?
