I've never heard of manufacture on demand. It sounds kind of iffy to me, but if the quality is the same as a regular DVD, I suppose it doesn't matter. I just don't understand why the studio didn't release it the way they did Season 1. There's certainly an audience for it.
Regular mass produced DVDs (technically DVD-ROM) are created by pressing, while DVD-Rs are burned individually. The quality should be the same.
To do a cost effective pressing of DVD-ROMs, you need to make a lot of them at a time, and I guess MGM isn't confident of the market. The MOD allows them to create them as needed, which actually costs more per disk, but eliminates excess inventory risk.
OK, that explains it, and makes sense, although I can't believe MGM isn't confident of the market. Just the Sean girls alone should break sales records. ;-P
