Mod post. What should I do?

With the mods stepping down and with all the hate/wank going around. I feel it'd be wise to have membership closed and the tags system no longer open for addition. I had a few users link me to the hate meme and I don't know what to think. This place is so large, there is no way to have a tags system to please everyone. I felt the group that handled

I know one thing I didn't know back when the new tagging system started (I was all for it) is that some people do actually use the tags to search for older fic. I've mostly always used them to sort through recent posts if I don't feel like skimming, but the new system doesn't work very well because they told us not to use the group tags unless it's genfic. And I don't want to search by individual pairings.

SHOCKED that the group tag is being used for genfic and NOT for the group and it's members related to. Oh that's painful, you see I feel gen fanfic shouldn't be as ostracized as it already is.

Unpaid accounts can make polls (not basic, but you're a plus account, so you're good to go). 8Db

No, no. They just didn't want us using the group tag for a fic that, say, only had Massu and Yamapi in it. It was actually to protect genfic, I just don't think they realized that some of us read just about anything written for our group.

Are pairings (the nicknames) really popular enough to warrent a tag, because if I have a list of all the popular pairings, I can add them to the tag list if this is what people want, but I can only imagine all the older fic that isn't tagged.

the comm is quite big....if do the nickname...it may make some of the pairing not included...
if u want to do that...how about u post the list of pairings first to looks whether u miss some pairings before u add it at the tag list...
that's just my suggestion..^__^

Honestly, we might need a dual system to deal with this. LJ's technical failings are extremely limiting, and it's causing a lot of the problems.

1. Make use of memories. Nobody uses them anymore since tags came out, but they're still viable options. There's also no limit to the number of memories you can make on an account.
2. Use Delicious, like somebody else said. Moving to Delicious might not be too difficult, since I think sorting by multiple tags there actually works well, so it would be a matter of going through each character tag in the comm and adding the links of those. (Oh apparently you can sort by more than just two tags, but as many as you want, which would be AWESOME for people who want, like, NC-17/angst/Ryo/Ueda or whatever.)

There's honestly no easy fix, and everything that isn't leave-it-the-way-it-is will be a pain to implement. Taking a poll might be helpful, but in the end, there's only a finite number of options.

One more thing: even with pairing tags, backdating using tags only takes you so far back in time. I learned this from trying to re-tag another fic community. Again, it's an LJ technical failing.

Using memories is a GREAT idea, I've seen it used so much more than tags in bigger comms not related to JE and find it a great handy resource. It's just getting everyone to start thinking outside the box.

personally I think jent is the most organized system out there

the tagging system really is spectacular

you just add the characters that are in the fic, the band, the rating, then the pairing (if there are any)

I'm still a little new but really it's so easy

maybe the hate memes ... yeah people wanna rant for a bit but really it can cause a bigger issue than it really is.

if there's a missing pairing, shouldn't there just be a small PM system to one of the mods and just ask for them about the pairing (like if the author cannot find it and it might be there already) and the mod can approve or assist?

then maybe a post for the rules and the author promising not to violate the comm?

as far as tagging goes, i think theres no way that everyone can possibly be satisfied - people seem to keep forgetting that jent isnt like the average band fic comm, where theres only about 5 to 15 character involved in any given fic. there's so many bands and people, that tagging by pairing is totally illogical. i personally dont have any issues with the current system, but adding tags for the most popular pairings (jin/kame, ueda/ryo, tegoshi/massu, etc)might make it easier for people to search for fic and calm people down somewhat.

and i completely agree that the mods should be a bit stricter and enforce the rules, but i hope that you dont decide on closing the membership - it would be such a waste of a really amazing community.
