Just for kicks

Srs bizness later; lj is not the place for such things!

What lj is good for, however, is wasting time. The Sheepman linked me to an article on Miyazaki @japanator.com, which in turn led me to their Top 50 Anime of the Decade list, and I decided I'd go through the list and offer up my own inane commentary/thoughts. Briefly. Whenever I feel like ( Read more... )

blah, television is stupid and yet awesome, geek

Clannad is ridiculous and - frankly - kinda stupid. Rachel and I watched 6 or 7 episodes before we gave up. There's just nothing to it (imho, anyways). I don't get the draw.

I LOVE both Evangelion and Gundam Seed. Evangelion especially. It loses something if you've been spoiled for it, which I think most people have, but I remember being completely blown away when I got it for Christmas one year and watched the entire thing in a couple days. Seed took a little longer for me to get in to but once I gave it a chance I really loved it.

You think I'm the only person who's disappointed that Revolutionary Girl Utena didn't make it on that list?

I believe the majority of Clannad's fanbase is male. In my (admittedly limited) internet trolling, I don't think I've ever run across a female fan/blogger singing Clannad's praises. Call me sexist, but I think that says a lot about its quality. In any case, I think the designs are ugly as shit. Their faces bug the crap out of me.

I do plan on watching Evangelion at some point! I think(?) I've been spoiled, but it was such a long while back that I don't recall what the spoiler was. Eventually I have to see it, since it's, you know, A CLASSIC.

Utena was from the 90s, wasn't it? This list only covered titles from 2000-2009. (Until I recognized that I was full of righteous indignation when I didn't see Cowboy Bebop on the list.) With my giant genderplay/feminist button, I shall have to watch that at some point.

Hahaha. "Until I recognized that I was full of righteous indignation when I didn't see Cowboy Bebop on the list."

I had the same reaction :P
However, the same thing goes for One Piece, for me. Greatest anime evar! (imho :P)

Yeah, definitely recommended to us by a guy.

Aaand that would explain some other things (yes, including Cowboy Bebop!) I was expecting to see on this list not being there. Derp.

But the real point of this reply - oh my god watch Utena. She's my favorite heroine ever. Its so messed up and weird and fantastic and I just love it. Absolutely my favorite anime, no contest. It's withstood the test of time better than Evangelion (again, imho), and is the kind of thing I just HAVE to go back and rewatch periodically. It still seems so fresh every time I see it. They had a really shitty production budget, and it's still so cool to look at what they chose to spend their frames on and pick the scenes apart. I JUST REALLY LOVE IT OKAY!

No yaoi?

Not interested.

Not quite, but Genshiken has an absolutely hilarious episode that is a total send-up of yaoi - one girl is a closet fujoshi, and she winds up spinning a yaoi story in her head about her male friends. I mean, she goes into assigning them character types based on their personality and pairs them up all over the place. It is pretty much one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.

You know I kid.

I'm actually more indifferent/passive to this list than anything else - mainly because I've kind of moved beyond anime series. They're just very tedious to get into now - I honestly think the last one I faithfully watched was Samurai Champloo.

I'm much more interested in the shorts and films, particularly the ones coming out of Studio 4°C.

...Well, my anime tastes are pretty firmly rooted in the 90s if this list is any indication. Some of these don't seem recent enough, though. Ah My Goddess has been around since the early 90's, for example. I'm surprised more of the big popular ones like Bleach, One Piece, and Inuyasha aren't on here. Not that they're necessarily good (one occasion they are), but they were significantly popular.

In several cases where the title was around for awhile (Eva, AMG, Ghost in the Shell) it seems they went with the most recent iteration. It also looks like the titles were rated by the Japanator staff.

I miss the painted cel look of the 90s work.

Cromartie High School - I haven't finished it, but the humor and style is very similar to Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoiyo!! Masaru-san as far as I've seen. So, I'm most certain you would enjoy it ( ... )
