Spindle's End by Robin McKinley is also quite good, I highly recommend it. I keep meaning to get others by her.

She also wrote another adaptation of Beauty and the Beast called "Rose Daughter," but I think "Beauty" is far superior. It's one of my all-time favorites.

the enchanted forest chronicles! by patricia wrede. ah, the joys of dealing with dragons, talking with dragons, etc etc. :)

I was a sucker for fairy tales too.

You would probably like Nicholas Stuart Gray's stories (if you can find them, that is: Your best bet is library ILL)

"A Wind From Nowhere" and "Mainly in Moonlight"
