It’s funny, in between bits of the stories that I do write, and the novel cheap paperback mystery that I am not yet giving up on writing, there are bits of scrap material, stuff that doesn’t fit into any proper story, conversations that can’t possibly fit into a canon-compliant anything but just appear, usually when I’m in the shower

I was part of Jenna_Thorn's gaming group, and she's giving me credit for the "loaf of bread as currency unit" idea. She asked me to come say more about it.
I grew up living overseas, and had to deal with currency exchange on a regular basis.
It was useful to pre-compute several exchanges, and then think about them as bases for figuring whether I was being cheated or not, or whether some price represented a deal.
The cost of a basic loaf of bread, a can of soda, a liter of vodka. These are useful landmarks for navigating a foreign economy.
If you pre-compute the exchange rate for a few items, you will likely be quicker at calculating the cost of a new object in your "native" currency.
This works whether your native currency is the dollar or the gold-piece. I suppose it would work just fine for non-Terran people too :)

I remember you and Dallas getting into huge Call of Cthulu discussions about travel and Egypt and exchange rates and wow, we spent so much energy entertaining ourselves, didn't we?
I don't know that you have to start with the SG1 series if the lead characters don't tickle your fancy. You might skim Wikipedia or something for basic background / worldbuilding / mythology, but I really do think that SG:A, once past the pilot, pretty much successfully stands on its own. Not saying that there aren't throwouts, references to characters with history (McKay is in a couple of episodes, as is Weir) or the general background, but we started with Season one of SGA, then Himself got hooked and we splurged on seasons one through nine of SG1, since there was such an increibly long time between SG:A release dates. And now we are waiting for season ten of SG1 as impatiently. 8-)
