Title:  Extraneous Information
Author:  jenlee1
Word Count:  100
Pairing:  Holmes/Watson
Rating:  PG
Warnings: none
Summary:  An unfortunate moment of clarity.

“You mean to marry her.”  The words leap out uninvited - hard and accusing, tinged with disbelief.

“I love her, Holmes.”  And again, more intently, as if repeating it will make it true.  “I love her.”

“You love me.”  It is a statement of fact, crystal-clear and irrefutable and utterly, maddeningly irrelevant.  It isn’t the point, anymore.  Perhaps it never was.

His hand hovers on the doorknob, eyes too bright, the set of his body far more eloquent than words could ever be.

I’m sorry.

The door falls closed behind him with a soft, measured click.  In the stillness, something shatters.
