Both South and North Korea (among others) appear to have another huge problem at the moment... As often goes with poverty, there's now a booming market in girls being sold or tricked into going overseas to be slaves in underground brothels. There's a current (and very interesting) article series on it being published at the SF Chronicle:

I didn't read the other three articles in the series, but have been seeing a lot of articles and TV shows about the topic recently. Perhaps the trial of our Canadian pig farmer who murdered 49 prostitutes (that he admits to), and probably had dozens of accomplices along the way, has been a factor in the wave of publicity ( ... )

Obviously way off-topic... :)

I was quite surprised, looking for information on homelessness, to see you posting in one of the comms... I've got a 20-year-old FTM friend on my flist that right now IS homeless (currently couchsurfing) as he ran from a heavily emotionally abusive home life a few weeks ago -- do you have any idea on where to get information that might help him? (Or info about shelters? He said that he's been told that they're so awful that he'd be better off going back to his parents, to summarize; I've heard that they're not fun/pleasant, but not intolerable.)

Sorry for the delay in reply - I just found your post today! Unfortunately, based on what I've heard from others who have been homeless, your friend may be right about the shelters. Many homeless people prefer the streets and only resort to shelters in desperately bad weather. There are so many people now in the same situation, it probably isn't as easy to get help as it might have been in years past ( ... )
