(I might tack on some extra stuff to it...since I need to explain how Alfons is still alive and Ed is, in fact, not...which goes more along the lines of Ed sacrificed his life for Alfons's. "Equivalent Exchange", if you will.

Very depressing - so Ed is dead and they are separated in the afterlife? :O

Ed died, and Alfons was left to live. Essentially, Ed died for Alfons, but Alfons can't remember Ed, and why the whole thing was ironic.

Sort of like how the man sells his soul to save the life of his beloved, but his beloved forgets him? Just not in those exact terms :<
