I was part of a tour today--Ruok came by my desk with two people I don't know who they were, talked about how the copier/printer/scanner was off by itself in Engineering and how they moved it over by me 'cause I'm the only one who uses it, and mentioned how I was brought on just to scan the million documents over there. As it happens, the republican party is very strong in rural communities which, yes, tend to be net recipients of government outlays.
This does illustrate the cultural divide between the supporters of the republican party. There's the smart, wealthy, urban, libertarian group. They want to pay less taxes and fully expect less services in return - "let private industry handle it", they say, in essence. Then there's the poor, rural, religious group; the people who would support Santorum.
These groups have very little in common, really. It's quite naive to assume both have the same ideology. I doubt many of those who swear by Ayn Rand are also among those who deny evolution.
It's a pity, because it goes on for a few pages of things I generally support (like ending these stupid farm subsidies, mortgage interest deductions, stop it with the stupid bigotry, etc).
