Note that this may just be my perception of it, but I feel like the reason people are so into "high fantasy" [castles, kings/queens, knights, etc. into elves, dragons, magic, etc.] is that it's a significantly simpler life, once you get past the whole Bear Grylls element. I think that is pretty much the allure of High Fantasy. It is a simpler life compared to our modern society. We like it because it's an escape to something less complicated. :)

In a way future sci-fi is like that too. In Star Trek we have technology that can do all the cooking and cleaning, leaving us time to go explore the stars and satisfy our curiosity. :)

I dunno. I don't quite feel the same way about sci-fi. Space exploration is completely foreign to me, so I have a difficult time identifying with it, while fantasy is like going to the park as a kid [but bigger].

Not to mention A.I. causing all sorts of new trouble.

I guess it depends on the person, if they like traveling to unfamiliar places or not. Exploring and making discovieries. And if the AI is homicidal (that does seem to happen often, doesn't it?)
While, Fantasy has the option of living off the land with an simple lifestyle and maybe two neighbors at the most?
