Going back to school might be cool, but I couldn't do it with a family in tow. No way I could concentrate on studies.

One of the lecturer's recommendations was to take free online courses and avail yourself of the knowledge offered, then sign up and test out of classes when you're ready. Not a perfect option, since I doubt it will ever be possible to test out of an entire degree, but better than the slow way. It also gives a better answer to the "What are you doing now?" question in an interview than the WRONG answer, "Looking for a job."
