The subject line is really only because it's pretty much my favourite song right now. I'll try to relate, tho:

ZOMG I HAS A BRUDDER HAS A QATS

Extra Dollar: Taxes for The Man

1) Each man pays $10 toward the room.
Total in Wallet: -$30. Total in Pot: $30

2) Manager gives them back a $5 refund.
Total in Wallet: -$25. Total in Pot: $25

3) Bellhop keeps $2 from the refund.
Total in Wallet: -$27. Total in Pot: $25. Bellhop Pocket: $2

4) Add the totals: -27 + 25 + 2 = 0. All money accounted for.

5) The error in the math is that a dollar is NOT missing, but that two dollars were incorrectly added to the wrong side assuming the total paid was still $30.

6) Originally the men paid $10 each for the room. In total that's $30, which I will refer to as the "Pot". $5 was refunded, bringing the Pot down to $25 for the room. The Bellhop only gave the men $3 change out of the refund, a dollar each, so essentially each man paid $9, or $27 in total. With $27 paid, but the manager only holding $25 in the Pot, this leaves $2 unaccounted for-- The $2 the Bellhop is keeping as tip.

7) Bellhop takes a smoke break and heads for the McDonald Dollar Menu.

There was a sketch on Square One TV once [a fun math-oriented public television series for grades 3-6, approximately] about correct order in carrying out multiple functions in an equation, i.e.: 10² - 5 + (15 x 20) / 3 = ? [not that I want to see what kind of crap answer that gives--it's purely example]

The correct order is Parentheses, Powers [Exponents], Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction, or PPMDAS [PEMDAS]. Multiplying and dividing, or adding and subtracting, have equal weight and should generally be done left to right. To illustrate this, the sketch went as follows:President Guy asks Advisors 1 and 2 to help him with this problem:10 - 5 + 4 = ?
Both advisors chimed in "9!" "1!" at the same time, then reversed their answers at the same time ["1!" "9!"]. President Guy was naturally confused, and they explained that addition and subtraction could be carried out in either order, though it could create a different answer depending on the order. One of the advisors then asked for context for the equation to help them solve ( ... )
