This movie is absolutely in my top ten movies to bring to that deserted island list. The whole thing is a poem. It is ugly beyond words and beautiful beyond description. Huge ups to Nick Cave, who continues to amaze me and rarely lets me down (though I haven't read And the Ass Saw The Angel, I expect the best).
Winstone, Huston, Watson, and Pearce were in their best elements here, yes, but what an incredible supporting cast! Stanley's underlings, so corrupt and weak and pathetic and perfect. The doctor whose expression as he looks up from ghastly wounds sums up everything the movie seems to stand for. And let us not forget the wonderful and terrible bounty hunter as portrayed by none other than John Hurt!
I'm pretty amazed it took you this long to see The Proposition, Miah. But I'm damn glad that you did.
