Actually this is a lot like the Japanese claiming that they invented curry...

But even then, the Japs have more basis for a claim, considering that they have a distinct culture and heritage that is not shared by any other other people.  Our culture and heritage is almost indistinguishable from Malaysia's, and for more than a century, they were essentially the same!
