I'm not sure how many of you have heard about the Changi Airport Race but over the weekend, there was this publicity stunt where a Porsche Carrera GT3 raced against a B747-200F down the runway (actually the Porsche chickened out and used a taxiway, but let's not be pedantic ( Read more... )

I don't know for sure (and I don't know anybody who'd tell me for sure), but I suspect the event was sponsored by Porsche. 1) The 'official' video clip features the car way more often than the plane. 2) The car was on display at the airport for weeks. 3) Porsche obviously stood to win.

There was a somewhat similar contest between a BMW and a plane. And guess who sponsored it?

Heh, no prizes for guessing who won too.  Aiyah, in these races, if the car wins, it's sponsored by some car company.  Otherwise, the plane wins.

If this event is really sponsored by Porsche, then it really begs the question: who chose a 74?

And at the prize-giving ceremony, the pilots were nowhere to be seen.  So what would have happened if the plane had really won?  I guess they weren't banking on that....

Which probably answers your question about static take-off and thrust de-rate.

74: yeah, why not an A380 if they decided to go for the size?

But they chickened out and didn't put it on the same runway....
