IRL: Writing Randomness

May 06, 2014 16:11

Should I be worried that I have a file called ForgotWhatThisIsFor.odt (Writer text file), but it's only two paragraphs long?

How do you forget what you're writing for in two paragraphs?*

It's pretty decent, too. I think I'll expand it.

*Be me, apparently. O.o

At least you can find yours. I name stuff like turtledingus.txt and wonder why I can't find it later. >_>

I try to use whatever I feel is most memorable* -- either something descriptive, the name of the piece, or a name that's important. Unless it's LJI, those are "LJI9[two-digit week number][two-digit draft number]". And I have a giant folder of unfinished stuff, old drafts, and partial ideas (these last are denoted by starting with the word "idea", so I can go through them when I'm stumped), so if I really lose something, I can start with what looks likely and then just click through in alphabetical order until I find it.

*Which means that absolutely the most memorable thing about these two paragraphs to my mind was that I'd forgotten why I wrote them. O.o

I have files like that simply called "untitled" and there is a paragraph and I have no idea what the story was supposed to be about at all.

Oh, I have those. I try to type up a quick outline and save it if I'm not sure how long it'll take to come back to it.

I try to jot ideas down when I can, but I think the untitled ones I start with complete ideas in my head and then get distracted and forget why I even started. I recently went through all my unfinished stories (there are a lot) and there was one that was a paragraph and gives absolutely no clues what it was about, lol. At least the others, even if I don't remember what I was going to write, give me enough to continue the story in some way.

I'm currently working on one I started in 2010 that I could never seem to finish. I started it three different times (two with the same exact intro, and one with a variation) and could never get it right. I plan to finish all three with different storylines. I need to clear out my unfinished folder.

I need to clean out my folder, too. A lot of it is drafts -- I'll have six or seven drafts for a story before I find one I like, and I like typing in a blank document, so often they're all saved in different files -- but there's still a good bit that's incomplete as well.

I have a few stories like that -- they all start from the same basic stuff, and then take off in different directions. :) It's pretty fun.
