I love cats... but they don't always love me back.
When I was very young, the family cat used to come into my bedroom, sit at the foot of my bed, and meow plaintively... just like your cat. Except that out cat didn't try to steal my pillow.
Each time I leaned out of the bed half-asleep to see what the matter was... our cat would leap up and try his level best to claw my eyes out.
Really.
After doing this several nights in a row, my parents took the cat to the vet to get him declawed... and found out the animal had a nasty neurological condition. The poor thing was in constant pain, which partially explained his viciousness. The condition was incurable, and the vet "put him to sleep".
I've tried to be sympathetic and understanding as to why the cat behaved the way he did... but I can't really say I felt that badly when I was told the cat was "never coming home"...
