Christ, how big is your "proper" camera? I've seen that Fuji FinePix, but it seemed to me to fall between the two stools of truly portable and truly proper. I'm somewhat tempted by the Panasonic Lumix for a portable, or whatever it was that Brian Dolton bought. I'm beginning to feel that I ought to buy a new proper camera as well (current one being three years old now) especial;ly since the bodies seem no more expensive than a single decent lens.
Saw some interesting buildings on my walk from C&G Moorgate (pay extra mortgage money) to Citibank in Paternoster Sq (get out money while $/£ rate is good). I found myself walking down Wood Street (City of London Police Station I didn't know of, plus a funny little bit of a church in the middle of the road) and then I glanced along Gresham Street to see another interesting church. Incredible how you can discover hidden bits of the city only 30 yards from parts that you know extremely well.
I have a Canon EOS400D, which was the entry-level "pro-sumer" model a while back (3 years, I think) plus a few lenses. So it's only "normal" size, but chuck in a couple of capable zooms and you'd be commuting with about £1500 in gear every day. The body's nothing like as heavy as a proper Pro job, but you're still looking at a fair bit of weight. For 40-45 minutes walking about the City once or twice a week? Sod that. The little Fuji will tuck in a coat pocket and if I lose or drop it, well it's cheap enough that I won't be too bothered. And part of what I hope will prove to be the "fun" is finding out what I can do with it. After the pay reviews, out of which I came smelling somewhat floral (promoted to Director, healthy rise, ditto bonus) I'm narrowly failing to justify buying the new EOS7D, mainly because I don't think I'm good enough to benefit from its extra ability. I think a decent macro lens would probably be a more intelligent buy. Still about £600 for the one I fancy

That said, seems like a good project. I need to carry my camera around more.
