1. Can someone talk to me about stuff published under Creative Commons, specifically photographs? I need to find scientific images I can use as references, but I want stuff that's in the public domain. I feel like I need to understand what Creative Commons means.

Do you use Flickr? I find it easiest to Google "flickr creative commons," select the "attribution" link and search within those results. Generally, Creative Commons means that people want their work to get fair use, without ridiculous policing, but want credit for the art they create. My stuff is all licensed that way.
