I'm doing some unfollowing on DW/Twitter/LJ/Tumblr. If I happen to upset someone by this action, please let me know and I'll add you back. Just trying to declutter a little bit in the new year

I'm not sure that I would call this fantasy, but it is awesome and does have witches and magic, although they are handled in a more realistic as opposed to fantastical way: Wise Child by Monica Furlong
I may think of more, but that's the one that springs to mind...
Re: ETA2, I'm sure you've read Harry Potter with her, but Rowling was so very good about putting in strong female characters that it's worth a re-read if she hasn't already. There's the Hunger Games series, though we haven't read it yet, but the main character is a girl. (I'm running through my bookshelves in my head as I go here, lol). Um, a lot of mine are just a bit too old for her. Hmm. Well, there's always the Staff Picks for Young Adults or Middle Readers at the Powell's Books website. Seriously, I adore that bookstore. And their recommendations have never led me wrong! OOH! I found one called "The Twistrose Key" that has an 11 yo girl as the main character? Anyway, take a look, and see if you can find any of them at your library?
Hey, jela, I had a comment Re: ETA2 that got marked as spam, lol. But it had some links to my favorite bookstore's website and some of their staff pick lists, especially the middle reader and young adult sections. Seriously, the staff at Powell's have the best recommendations, and from what I could see there were a fair number of fantasy genre books with girls as protagonists.
Ooh, we have some recs in abundance! My DD1 recommends Tomorrow when the war began by John Marsden Anything by Cathy Cassidy The Skulduggery Pleasant series Ruby Redford by Lauren Child The Midnight Zoo by Sonya Hartnett (edit: oops thats got two brothers as main protagonists, but still very good Teensy Farlow and the home for mislaid children by Jen Storer Mind you, she also loves the diary of a whimsy kid, the Carrie diaries and Ravenswood so her taste is questionable at the very least Keep warm!!!!
also Wildwood by Colin Meloy She and I read Shiver - possibly a bit old for 11 years, but I wasn't terribly impressed with it - Twilight wannabe with Werewolves that has nothing to do with the full moon, but cold weather (I just couldn't come to terms with that!) I've also been trying to get her to read A picnic at Hanging Rock (or even just watch the movie! - supernatural elements, a bit scary, classic Australian book and movie) but she's very resistant - damn
She'll probably roll her eyes at them She's also read the Hunger Games, and here's some more .... My sister the vampire by Sienna Mercer The fairy's return (Gail Carson Levine who wrote Ella Enchanted) The little white horse by Elizabeth Gouge The last dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde
I seeing a few thing about Flowers in the attic as it's the 30th anniversary! Not sure if would encourage reading that one just yet!
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine (or anything else by her... all her main characters are girls) Dealing With Dragons by Patricia Wrede (It's a four book series... Book of Enchantments) Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen by Garth Nix (Old Kingdom series... these books are scary but I love them) Newt's Emerald by Garth NIx (regency romance... age appropriate... girl dresses as boy to have adventures) Leviathan Series by Scott Westerfeld (girl dresses like boy to join elite pilots between World War I and II... fantasy element is steampunkish and awesome and includes revisionistic telling of this time period) Protector of the Small Series by Tamora Pierce (I adore her other series, but they are not appropriate until girl is 13 and older) Crown & Court Duel by Sherwood Smith (on later printings these books were combined into one... LOVE THESE) I just read the Spy Princess by Sherwood Smith recently and it is brilliant too! The Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer (boy and girl siblings narration) A Tale Dark & Grimm Series by Adam Gidwitz (

Some of these she's read, so that's excellent. I am actually reading Leviathan to her class this year. I think she picked up Sabriel but didn't get very far. I loved those books. I think a new one is coming out this fall?
