Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything that doesn't use a trope as a device somewhere. What ISN'T a trope? It's like... how long is a piece of string?
Hunh. So I'm just deluded in thinking that I don't always write fics with tropes?
Maybe reverie_indigo has it right and that without tropes you just get bizarre stories that the reader wants to kill the writer for having constructed.
There has to be a theme, an underlying flavour or idea powering the whole thing... I seriously want to know what isn't a trope! It's not a trick question.
No no! I know it's not a trick question and reverie_indigo was just saying the exact same thing!
I thought tropes were just the common ones. Maybe at this point in time, there is no such thing as uncommon tropes. We are still just retelling the same stories the Greeks told!
When you get down to it, tropes are ideas and sorry to say it but, truly original ideas are rarer than four-leaf clovers. I'm not going to say they don't exist, but they are VERY VERY rare. I think what we all hope to do is either take a familiar trope and give it a new twist, or we fin a less familiar one and hope we can say something new with it.
I'm a ittle confused now if my definition of a trope isn't too wide. Because classical archetype situations are for me tropes, too. And if you add them basically everything is written with at least one trope...
