Measuring sticks

So you choose to measure by the only standard that allows your life to be meaningless?

ETA: Here's the full context.  It's from Ender in Exile which kills me a little because I think OSC is so full of hate it disgusts me, but he's also brilliant.  *sigh*  Ok, full context:

"Genetically speaking, Po, I do not exist. I am off the web of life."

What? What does that even mean?

I believe that you have to find your own meaning in life.

Oh, sorry. I know it's completely out of context here. The point is that we can choose the yardstick we use to measure meaning in our lives. This was from a book I was reading back in January and I just wanted to stick it somewhere. It's a good reminder to me that I have a choice about how I measure meaning in my life and when I am finding life unsatisfactory, it's probably because I'm using the wrong yardstick. Does that make sense? You seem to have said it much more succinctly than I am.

Yes, that makes sense. Sometimes life gets to me, too, and since I don't believe in an afterlife, I have to find my own meaning. If I thought about it too much, it would drive me crazy.

Yes. I'm pretty much with you. I think that's one of the things that appeals to me strongly about Merlin. He has this destiny and it's a focus for him and he has Meaning. If life is all about laundry and eating, then I don't want to sign up for that. LOL. Time for me to start a new quilt (and finish beading the little one I started last spring!). Your icon is perfect, by the way!

LOL! You always crack me up. How do you manage it? This was actually an addendum to my locked navel gazing post, but I didn't want to add it to that. I love that you are thinking of yourself as a Filthy Enabler too:D

Tummy button is sore from too much inspection. LOL that you have a memo to be nice one day next week. Maybe I should try to send myself a memo to be less cranky one day. Does it work?

I'm working on finding another yardstick. It's not working very well. I keep returning to the broken yardstick; or rather, it's like it keeps returning to me like a boomerang.

Hunh? Naked man sets off bomb in desert? Does not compute. I'm thinking I'm lacking important context.

Let me know how the memo program goes.

Oooh, live an unmeasured life. That sounds like Thoreau.

LOL. You are not giving pointless advice. I think it's quite sound.
