Volunteerism?

Feb 27, 2007 19:27

I got signed up for a volunteer position that I can't get out of until the end of May and I hate it. It wasn't my idea and it puts a burden of time on me which I absolutely hate. To top it off, the whole idea of my job was created last year by the person I am now "under" and it's completely unnecessary. Grrr. I told the person in charge of ( Read more... )

I guess I was a little too cryptic in my post. It has to do with preschool, which is a co-op, so no, I can't. I just have suffer until the end of April. Grr.

Heh. I think that if I didn't have other obligations, I wouldn't mind it nearly so much. I actually just have to do the stupid part I hate one more time. I guess I should send out a reminder now:P

Did you see my pointy sharp thing for stabbing effigies that celandineb gave me? I love it. It's totally helping!

Uh, given that it's VOLUNTEER, I don't see how you are trapped by it, and even more so if you did not, yourself, sign up for this obligation. Why can't you say, "I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but there was a misunderstanding and I honestly do not have time to devote to this project. You will, unfortunately, need to find someone better suited." And then walk away.

Well, it's "volunteer" in the sense that I'm not getting paid. I was a little too cryptic in my post. It has to do with the preschool which is a co-op. So, I can't just walk away, especially at this point. Grrrr.

Ditto-ing the above comments. If it's volunteer, and *especially* if you were volunteered by someone else, you can Just Say No. And it sounds like you should!

Um, well, it has to do with preschool, which is a co=op. Go see responses to the other comments. I'm too disgusted to think about it any more:P

We went through the same thing last year when Shorty was born three months early. We tried to explain to the Swim Organization that The Elder belongs to that we would barely be able to get her to meets on time due to our situation, and everyone within the organization understood, except the woman who organized the volunteers. Her response was 'everyone has to do their fair share, no matter what' which really ticked me off. Luckily, the other parents chipped in to cover the Warden's shifts at swim meets for which we were eternally greatful, but volunteering is just that. It's giving of yourself, and sometimes things we don't plan for happen, and then you just can't do it.

It's not that I can't do it; it's that I hate it.

Yay for helpful understanding people though. Sounds like that woman was just nutty.

I know, and I do as well. That's why the Warden usually has to do it. I'm just not a cheery, people person and that doesn't go over well with volunteering. The woman in question is nutty, but then again, I understand how frustrating it can be for her, having to ensure that every position for a hosted swim meet is full. It requires a lot of people and the stress must be enormous. However, you have to cut slack for people with serious problems or issues.
