I don't think he refers to himself by name at all except in that prayer. His favorite self-title is "son of man" which he uses almost exclusively. He does admit to being the Christ on some occasions, most notably to the Samaritan(!) woman in John 4. She says, "'When Messiah (meaning Christ) comes, he will explain everything to us.' Jesus said, 'The one talking to you is he.'" But usually he did not want people he healed, or his discviples, or the demons he cast out of people to publicize this, or to make it known until after he had risen (as in Mark 5:43, 8:29-30, 9:9, 30-31).

Thanks so much for filling me in on these events and passages to get the bigger picture :) It's so interesting... Sometimes I wonder, why didn't He want to be known more broadly during His earthly ministry? And how strange it must have been to the people to see His disciples, after Jesus' ascension, declaring Him with such clarity and boldness! It's all so amazing :)

A follow-up - interestingly, he did NOT tell the woman at the well not to tell anyone he was the Christ, and in fact she went into town telling everyone about Jesus and asking, "Could he be the Christ?" and eventually any came to believe just that very thing.

Yeah! Of all the different people whom He spoke with, it's so interesting that He revealed this to her and she to her people. God surely works in mysterious ways.

I have heard that a teacher like Jesus would often teach by asking questions moreso than by answering them. In each of the synoptic gospels, there is a conversation where Jesus asks His disciples first "Who do men say that I am?" and then, "Who do you say that I am ( ... )

Thank you so much for sharing this context and these verses, Nathan :)

It's so interesting to put together the picture of how the Lord Jesus was teaching his disciples and the people about himself. May this help us to get to know Him better, too! :)
